The Science of Jyotish: How 36 Guna Milan Works
In Vedic Astrology (Jyotish), marriage is considered the sacred merging of two distinct souls. Before a union is finalized, astrologers perform a deeply complex ritual known as Ashtakoot Milan (or Kundli Matching). Unlike Western astrology which primarily focuses on the Sun Sign, Vedic matching maps the exact position of the Moon at the time of birth to determine the Nakshatra (Lunar Mansion). Our Kundli Matching Calculator breaks down these ancient algorithms into the 8 fundamental tests (Kootas) to calculate your exact score out of 36 possible Gunas.
Understanding the 8 Kootas (Ashtakoot)
The 36 points are not distributed equally. The final three tests carry the heaviest weight, as they dictate the health, temperament, and spiritual longevity of the marriage.
- •Nadi Koota (8 Points): The most critical test. It measures the physiological and genetic compatibility of the couple to ensure healthy progeny. If both partners have the exact same Nadi (pulse), it creates a severe "Nadi Dosh," scoring 0 points and often serving as a dealbreaker for traditional astrologers.
- •Bhakoot (7 Points): Measures the emotional harmony and overall life path alignment. It checks how the two Moon signs relate to one another mathematically on the Zodiac wheel.
- •Gana Koota (6 Points): Measures temperament. Humans are divided into Deva (Divine), Manushya (Human), and Rakshasa (Demonic/Fierce). Matching temperaments prevents massive ego clashes and ensures a peaceful household.
What is the Minimum Acceptable Score?
To pass a traditional Kundli matching test, the couple must score a minimum of 18 out of 36 Gunas. Anything below 18 is generally rejected. Scores between 18 and 25 are considered average and highly workable. Scores between 26 and 32 are considered excellent, indicating a deeply prosperous union. A perfect 36 out of 36 is incredibly rare and is classically associated with mythological figures like Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Manglik Dosh (Mangal Dosha)
It is important to note that Ashtakoot Milan does not automatically calculate Mangal Dosha. If Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Natal Chart, it generates fiery, aggressive energy that can cause friction in marriage. Typically, a Manglik is advised to marry another Manglik so the intense planetary energies cancel each other out (Parihar). Always consult a professional Pandit to deeply analyze the individual house placements beyond just the 36 Gunas.
